Top Makeup Looks to Pair with Red Lips

Posted by Joyce Lee on Jan 17, 2020

We all love sporting a luscious red pout every now and then. Whether you’re attending a special event, or you’re feeling extra fierce on any typical day, one of the easiest ways to take it up a notch with your glam is donning your favorite shade of red on your lips.

What’s great about a red lip is how incredibly versatile it is – it’s a stunning look that suits practically any occasion. But when it comes to wearing red lipstick (which is a pretty bold look on its own), you really have to pay more attention to how you do the rest of your makeup. Otherwise, there’s just way too much going on… which definitely isn’t the best look.

Here are 3 gorgeous makeup looks to complement a red pout!

1. Keep it fresh-faced

The ‘no makeup’ makeup look is actually one of the best looks to pair with a bold red lip. Since you’ve opted to make your lips the focal point, you definitely don’t want your entire makeup situation to end up looking too busy. The idea here is to keep it minimal.

On the days you don’t intend on wearing too much makeup (or any at all), you can use red lipstick to give your entire look a quick pick-me-up. The key to perfecting the barely-there makeup look? Take the time to show your skin some more love – in the AM and PM!

A healthy, glowing complexion pairs exceptionally well with any bold lip color. Keep your skin hydrated by moisturizing it with the right products before applying face primer. Then use either a tinted moisturizer or BB cream to even out your complexion.

Pro-tip: To make your pout appear more luscious, use your finger to apply a tiny bit of concealer over your cupid’s bow and then blend it out with a gentle dabbing motion. After coloring in your lips, lightly dust a bit of highlighter over your cupid’s bow to create the illusion of fuller lips.

2. Classic, winged eyeliner

When you’re going with a red lip, ‘less is more’ is the motto! But this doesn’t mean that you have to ditch the black eyeliner completely. In fact, a classic cat-eye looks incredibly stunning when paired with a bold lip color.

For a special occasion, you could even do something more creative like extending the eyeliner into the inner corners of your eyes to achieve a reverse cat-eye effect.

3. Bronzed beauty

A gorgeous, sun-kissed glow looks great on anyone. Let’s take your glam up a notch by adding bronzer into the equation!

The first step is to hydrate. For a naturally radiant complexion that glows from within, you really need to step it up with your entire skincare regimen. Then the next step is to skip the heavy contour. Instead, use bronzer to add definition into the natural contours of your face.

After giving your face a subtle sculpt, apply more bronzer into the areas that frame your face in a reversed ‘3’ pattern. Position the brush on your forehead near the temples, then bring the brush outwards and downwards, pulling it in over your cheekbones (towards your nose). Then sweep it backwards over that same area, bringing it in again over the jawline.

This is a more natural approach for sculpting your features, while bringing more warmth and dimension into your entire complexion.
