Microblading: All you Need to Know About This Brow Technique

Posted by LiveGlam on Mar 10, 2017

There’s a new trend taking the beauty world by storm, and it’s one you’ll want to get on board with. Eyebrows have been a huge topic of conversation in recent years. These days, the fuller the better (goodbye, pencil-thin nightmares of the millennium!), which means natural brows are in. Yep, we can finally rock what our mamas gave us… Well, with a little help, of course. Enter microblading: the brow technique you never knew you needed.

What is microblading?

The process is a form of eyebrow tattooing, but the ink doesn’t go as deep as tattoos. It’s semi-permanent and lasts up to three years (18 months is pretty average). Basically, the microblading artist uses a special microblading pen to draw in the individual strokes, one by one. It might hurt a tad, depending on your pain tolerance, since it’s a form of tattooing. It feels kind of like little scratches.

The first step takes an hour alone, which is when the artist draws the shape with a removable pencil. You can choose your ideal brow shape. Then, it takes another hour to meticulously fill in the brow. The process should take about two hours total, but the results are so worth it. You end up with extremely natural-looking brows anyway you’d like them.

What’s the healing time?

Your brows will look perfect immediately after the process is complete (post-procedure selfie, anyone?), but you’ll want to wait about a month to go swimming, wash your face with water, and rub your eyebrows. For about a week, mild swelling and redness is normal, but you definitely don’t have to hide. You’ll probably also want to schedule a follow-up appointment about a month after your appointment because the healing process can take between 25 to 30 days. After that period, it’s recommended to get a little touch-up. Overall, though, it’s a lot lower maintenance than eyebrow extensions and eyelash extensions.

How much does microblading cost?

Spending around $500 is the low-end for microblading. You can expect the procedure will run you about $700-$800. But remember: you’re getting one to three years of fuss-free, on-fleek eyebrows. The microblading doesn’t smudge, so just think about all that money you’ll save on eyebrow pencils and other tools over the course of three years.

Who should get microblading?

As microblading expert and trainer at Eye Define New York Nadia Afanaseva explains the technique, “Microblading is perfect for those who want to fully reconstruct, define, cover gaps, or fill-in over-plucked brows.” So, yeah, basically all of us who weren’t blessed at birth with literally perfect, full brows.

So, what do you think? Is microblading worth it? Bella Thorne swears by it, just sayin’. I know my brows could use some beefing up—if I don’t fill them in, it’s like I don’t even have any! Maybe I’ll put the procedure on my wish list. What about you, would you ever try microblading?
