How to Keep Your Makeup Looking Fresh This Summer

Who else has a love-hate relationship with summer?

We love soaking up the sun, we love the cute summer outfits, we love the colorful makeup combos we finally get to wear… all of that fun stuff. But the heat – we definitely don’t appreciate what stifling heat and humidity can do to a full face of glam!

You leave the house looking like your best self, then a couple of hours in… a ton of annoying issues start to surface (quite literally on your face). Foundation melting, eyeliner running, brows sweating off – the list of uncomfortable makeup situations goes on. The good news is that there are a bunch of ways to increase the staying power of your makeup even when the heat gets downright disrespectful.

Can’t wait to hear them? Here are a couple of ways to keep your makeup looking FRESH this summer!

1. Apply eyeshadow primer to your t-zone area

If you’ve got oily skin, then the struggle is REAL when it gets hot out. Even if you don’t have oily skin, the heat just has a way of bringing out the shine from everyone’s complexion!

The best way to prevent an oily t-zone? Apply a generous amount of Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion ($24) onto your t-zone or any other area of your face that tends to get oily during the day.

2. Less is more

Don’t you just hate it when you leave the house looking like your best self and a couple of hours in… your best self has melted away. Here’s a quick tip to keep your makeup from melting or turning into a hot sweaty mess: Wear less makeup.

Instead of liquid foundation, just opt for a heavier layer of concealer and buff it out with a powder foundation with buildable coverage, like MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation ($31).

Another advantage to ditching the heavy liquid foundation? You don’t get that icky mask-like feeling even when the weather is scorching!

3. Use translucent face powder to set your makeup

There are some people that can’t go a day without baking their face, while others have yet to embrace this trend.

Whichever type of person you are… now is definitely the time to do it! The easiest way to keep your makeup looking FRESH is to apply a layer of translucent face powder onto the areas of your face which tend to get oily throughout the day.

But you don’t have to go all out! Just use your powder brush to pick up a heavy layer of powder and use a dabbing motion to press it into those specific areas of your face. Let it sit for 1-2 minutes, then buff it away with the same brush.

4. Set your brows

The worst part about spending a day out in the heat?

When your brows start to show it. You know… when they start looking a bit shiny or worse, parts of your brows actually start to smudge off!

Before drawing on your brows, use a powder brush to press a layer of translucent setting powder or even a powder foundation into your brow region to create a matte canvas.

Instead of filling in your brows entirely with a heavy layer of brow product, opt for a more natural look by using a fine eyebrow pencil to draw on hair-like strokes.
