Skincare Glossary

When shopping for skincare products, who else pulls out their phone real quick to look up a couple terms and ingredients? Knowing which ingredients you should be looking for (as well as avoiding) is one of the best ways to make sure you choose the right products to address your specific skin concerns!

Here’s a list of important terms that you should get familiar with:

Antioxidant

We all know antioxidants are good for us, but what do they do for our skin?

What are antioxidants

On a regular basis, our skin is exposed to free radicals from various environmental factors. Simply put, free radicals are bad news! They have a damaging effect on cells and contribute to signs of premature aging – breaking down collagen and causing the skin to lose its elasticity.

This is where antioxidants come in! They help protect our skin by neutralizing free radicals. Known for their anti-aging benefits, antioxidants play a key role in mitigating the harmful effects of environmental stressors on our skin.

Humectant

When you come across this term, just think HYDRATION. Humectants are best known for their skin-replenishing properties because of their ability to increase water content in skin.

What are humectants

The science behind it is actually quite interesting! They attract the moisture from our surrounding air, and lock it into the surface of our skin to replenish and retain moisture levels.

Hyaluronic acid

Best for: Giving all skin types a boost of hydration. Hyaluronic acid is the MVP of hydration!

It’s a key ingredient in skincare for providing all skin types with a much-needed boost of hydration. Of course, it’s especially beneficial for dry or dehydrated skin.

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant and it contains antioxidant properties. This powerful combo helps us maintain our skin health while delivering a ton of anti-aging benefits. It effectively hydrates skin and reduces fine lines and wrinkles to give skin a youthful, plump appearance.

Vitamin C

Best for: Anti-aging, brightening dullness, and improving uneven skin tone.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can help us achieve healthy, glowing skin. It’s best known for its ability to brighten up a dull complexion, improve uneven skin tone, and fade dark spots or discoloration.

It can also reduce inflammation, shield the skin from free radical damage, and promote the production of collagen and elastin.

We hope you found this info useful for your next skincare haul! Let us know in the comments down below if we should add more words to our skincare glossary.
