You’re probably used to using 2-3 skincare products for your nighttime ritual or to get your day started in the morning. But, are you doing it correctly? Yes, there is a right way to layer your skincare products, and this is the order you should be following:
1) Cleanser
You should cleanse your face morning and night to get rid of all oil, makeup, and dirt! If it’s nighttime, you likely start with using a makeup wipe to remove your makeup from the day. But, if you only remove your makeup with wipes, there’s still makeup residue left on your face (we’ve all had those nights). So, you should always follow up with a cleanser to really get that face squeaky clean!
Make sure to use one that caters to your specific skin type! You also don’t want to strip your skin of its natural oils, so a dime-sized amount of cleanser is a good amount to use.
2) Toner
A toner isn’t absolutely necessary for your daily routine, but it does help with removing leftover dirt, evening out your skin, and taming oiliness. The best way to use toner is to put a few drops on a cotton ball and move it over your face in circular motions. You can also use a spray bottle toner, such as the Murad Hydrating Toner, if regular toner is too harsh.
3) Treatment
Now that your face is all clean, you can address specific problem areas such as acne, fine lines, scars, etc. You should always apply spot treatments or serums after your skin has been fully cleansed so that it can really be absorbed and do it’s magic. You should also wait a couple of minutes after applying a serum or treatment so they have time to actually absorb before your next step.
4) Moisturize
Moisturizing is essential for all skin-types, even oily! It ensures that your skin is hydrated and helps fight wrinkles and blemishes. Dry skin also produces more oil if not moisturized, which can cause more acne and unwanted shine. So make sure to moisturize at least once a day for healthy, happy skin.
5) Protection!
Before you head out in the morning, you should always throw on some SPF, even if its cloudy outside. Many moisturizers already have SPF in them so you can skip this step, but if not, be sure to add a light layer to protect your face from harmful UV rays! This helps prevents sun spots, premature wrinkles, and skin cancer.
And that’s it! Now you’re ready to apply some makeup or go bare-faced. Whichever your preference is, your skin has been properly prepped and taken care of!
