If you already have long, fluttering eyelashes, you are the envy of many and for the rest of us, we could only dream of such enviable lashes. Whilst it may not come naturally to us all, with a few changes to our skincare and makeup routines, we can all enjoy longer, thicker, and healthier eyelashes.
1. Apply a lash serum
Lash serums may seem like fads and whilst they aren’t going to give you instant results, after just a month of applying a day and evening lash serum will give you dramatic differences. Lash serums are full of vitamins and nutrients that your hair needs for growth and strength, without these your lashes can fall out easily and break. Just like you condition the hair on top of your head, lashes need conditioning too so a lash serum is the best way to ensure they’re kept healthy.
2. Dye your lashes
Lash tints are becoming increasingly popular as they can give the impression of all-day mascara without a drop of product being applied. Lash tints are particularly good if you have short, light lashes as they will emphasize every little lash so your set will look thicker and more dramatic instantly. Always make sure you go to a professional for this though as anything this close to your eyes requires specialist knowledge!
3. Remove your makeup carefully
Waterproof mascara is an absolute gem as it lasts all day without flaking or fading. However, it can be an absolute pain to remove! Whilst you may be tempted to scrub away as hard as you can to remove everything thoroughly, it’s much better to invest in an effective eye makeup remover which is gentle but will get the job done. Scrubbing too hard can cause your eyelashes to weaken, or even worse, fall out.
4. Switch up your diet
As we mentioned, your lashes need vitamins and nutrients to stay healthy and grow steadily. If you don’t have a balanced diet, your body isn’t going to get these all-important nutrients and your hair, lashes, and nails will suffer. Omega-3 fatty acids are one of the best ingredients for not only making your existing lashes strong but for encouraging hair growth for new lashes.
Omega-3 is commonly found in fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel, as well as in nuts, seeds and flaxseed oils. Alternatively, you can take supplements for an extra boost.
5. Give your lashes a break occasionally
There’s no doubt about it, whilst mascara may make your lashes look longer in the short-term, it’s going to have damaging effects if you wear it every single day. Mascara can dry your lashes out and weigh them down causing them to break or fall out and wearing it every day will prevent your lashes from growing long and healthy.
Having a no-makeup day is always good for your skin so try to have a couple a week, or at least remove your makeup as soon as you get home. If you don’t fancy ditching mascara completely, go for non-waterproof formulations as these will be kinder to your lashes.
