How to Get Your Makeup to Not Look Dry
With winter here in full force, your skin is likely going through a rough patch (literally), which means your precious makeup lewks are going through it too. For those suffering from dry skin but still trying to keep that face beat throughout these chilly months, here are some great tips on how you can get your makeup to look less dry and more fabulous!
Why does my makeup look dry?
There’s nothing worse than your makeup clinging on for dear life to your dry patches. Luckily, there are many tips and products that can combat this. Here’s how you can make your skin look extra smooth with makeup on:
1. Chemical Exfoliation is key!
I know I know, exfoliating seems like a given. BUT, we’re talking about chemical exfoliants here, not that St. Ives scrub stuff. As great as a scrub feels, it can actually do more damage than good, like causing premature aging, micro tears, and dehydration, aka the complete opposite of what you want. Instead of physical exfoliants, chemical exfoliants are much easier on your skin and they go even deeper into your pores to produce desired results.
With proper chemical exfoliation, all of those serums, moisturizers, SPF, and everything else you put on your face can actually sink into your skin better. So, you’re actually getting your money’s worth!

2. Moisturizers + Serums are your BFF’s
Moisturizing your face is a super important step in your skincare routine (besides using SPF of course), even if you have oily skin. After properly exfoliating, serums and moisturizers are the cherries on top that can make your skin smooth, radiant, and youthful. They also help create the perfect canvas to apply your bomb makeup lewks!
To give your skin a gorgeous glow, I highly recommend using a vitamin C serum. Vitamin C is great for stimulating collagen production, which helps reduce signs of aging, softens fine lines and wrinkles, and prevents new ones from forming. No fine lines = your makeup doesn’t look dry and crusty!
Don’t forget to apply your moisturizer and serum to your neck every day, it needs love too!

3. Use a lightweight foundation, then build with concealer
Foundation is not meant to cover up all of your blemishes, it’s simply supposed to even out your skin tone. Concealer is to be used to cover any of your problem areas after foundation. A big mistake us beauty lovers can make is applying too much foundation and expecting it to cover everything. Instead, it can lead to cakeyness, cracking, and emphasize wrinkles and dry patches.
After moisturizing, try using a lightweight foundation and then apply concealer only where needed. Less is more! Not only will your face feel lighter, but your makeup will look more smooth too.
Recommended product: Too Faced Born This Way Foundation (lightweight with a great, natural coverage, is made with coconut water, and great for dry skin!).
4. Apply eyeshadow primer to fine lines
If you find that your makeup starts settling into your fine lines throughout the day (mine always settle into my laugh lines, can we not emphasize those and make me look like an 80-year-old woman plz?), here’s a great trick for you! Take an eyeshadow primer (I personally love the original Urban Decay Primer Potion for this), and apply it directly on your fine lines before applying foundation. This will help prevent creasing and settling just like it does for your eyeshadow! Bye bye, smile lines.

6. Use a dewy setting spray
Finish off your entire look with a dewy setting spray. Not only will this give you a fresh, radiant glow, but it’ll give you that “I woke up like this” skin look too. A great setting spray will also make your makeup stay put and last all day. After all this work, we at least wanna slay our looks for more than 2 hours right?
