The Best Way to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

We get it, cleaning your makeup brushes is a chore. Diving into 20 different colors and experimenting with your eye makeup is fun and all, but the aftermath…? Not so much. However, it’s super important for you to consistently clean your brushes for the sake of your skin and precious pores! So, what are the best ways to clean your makeup brushes? Keep reading to find out!

1. Blendercleanser Solid Pro by Beauty Blender

Ok, this is hands down the best makeup brush cleaner I’ve ever tried, for many reasons. It’s a charcoal-infused cleanser that cleans brushes and makeup sponges super well, has convenient packaging, smells great (hints of lavender), and lasts a long time. It also comes with a silicone scrubbing pad for deep cleaning and you’re able to wash multiple brushes at a time. Trust me, it’s worth the $45 and will make your makeup brushes last longer!

Also, if you’re a traveling MUA, it’s very convenient to throw in your bag and clean brushes on the go!

2. The DIY Way

If you’re a DIY queen, dish soap will be your BFF when it comes to cleaning your brushes. Not only is this a super cheap alternative, but it gets the job done! All you need is gentle, antibacterial dish soap and a bottle of olive oil.

Grab a small bowl and mix 2 parts dish soap and 1 part olive oil. These measurements don’t have to be perfect, just make sure there’s more dish soap than oil. Grab your brush and wet it with water, then dip it into your mixture and swirl it around. Next, either use your fingers or a scrubbing pad to really get in there and massage the bristles to get rid of all the gunk.

Lastly, run your brush under the faucet again and it should be squeaky clean! Be careful not to get the handles of your brushes too wet when washing because it can loosen the glue and eventually detach the brush head! Lay them out to dry overnight and go to sleep peacefully knowing your precious brushes are in great shape.

3. How to Clean Your Brushes With No Water

If you’re trying to clean your brushes on the go and have no access to water, or you’re quickly switching eyeshadow colors and simply don’t want to get up (#canrelate), the Vera Mona Instant Brush Cleaner ($19.99) is your girl! No water or liquids needed. Just stroke your brush in their Color Switch sponge to completely remove any color and get back to blending in a flash! This product is also great for MUAs on set and those who love to play with colorful eyeshadow looks.

  • We used to clean our brushes with alcohol because they would dry so quickly. Of course, after a while, the little hairs would fall out and the brushes got kind of wonky from laying on the towel. What a great step forward for all of us.
