How to Get Your Makeup to Last All Night on NYE

Posted by Sally O'Kelly on Dec 16, 2017

If there’s one night a year we are going to be staying up late, it’s going to be New Year’s Eve. Even if you’re an early sleeper, there’s no excuse not to be up to at least the early hours on the last day/first day of the year. New Year’s Eve is both a dream and a nightmare for all beauty junkies, with metallic eyes, all the glitter, and bold lipsticks being totally acceptable on this magical night of the year, but it can also be a disaster in terms of ensuring your makeup actually lasts through the whole night.

It’s hard enough getting your makeup to last to the evening when you’re applying it at 7am on the morning commute, but when you’ve got glitter involved and are potentially talking about an 18-hour day, it’s gonna be even more tricky.

Don’t worry! We’ve got some great tips and tricks on how you can make sure your makeup lasts so you look as flawless leaving one year as you do going into the next.

Don’t skip out on the primer

When applying your makeup, you want to do absolutely everything to ensure it’s going to last and one of the first crucial steps is using a primer. There are so many primers out there that it can be difficult to know where to start but avoid anything that promotes itself as helping radiance and glow or pore minimising as these are going to do nothing for longevity. We love the Benefit Stay Flawless 15-Hour Foundation Primer as it’s all about holding your makeup in place for 15 fresh and flawless hours.

That means priming your eyes too

If you don’t go big on eye makeup for New Year’s Eve then is it really New Year’s Eve makeup? We think not. Whether you’re doing for a dramatic smoky eye or are embracing a full glittery look, you’ll want to use an eyeshadow primer to prevent all the horrible things like creasing and smudging. There’s no better eyeshadow primer out there than the NARS Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base and whilst pricey, you only need to use the tiniest amount so it’ll last you through the year ahead anyway.

Only use certified eye makeup glue

If you plan on using eye glitter or have the falsies at the ready, make sure you only use products which are designed for your delicate eye area. This is not only for safety reasons to ensure you don’t get any nasties near your eye, but a certified eye makeup glue will guarantee your eye makeup lasts longer too, so this is not the time to skimp and save!

Keep a setting spray in your handbag

Setting spray should be the final spritz to your look if you want maximum hold but it doesn’t have to be left at your dressing table. If your makeup is starting to budge, simply top up with another spritz and you’ll be good to go for the evening. Our favorite is the classic Urban Decay All Nighter, designed for nights like NYE especially as it comes in a handy travel-sized version, perfect for the smallest of clutches.

What are your top tips for ensuring makeup lasts throughout the night?
