By now, you Glammers probably know what baking your face means. But, do you know what powders work best for it? We gotcha covered! Read to find out how your makeup can come out better than grandma’s cookies with these products.
What is baking?
For you makeup beginners, the term “baking” literally just means setting your makeup. The technique was created years ago by the drag community and gives you a flawless, long-lasting finish. By taking an extra minute out of your makeup routine to bake, you can avoid having to touch up throughout the day or smudging all of your hard work!
But… all good baking starts with a great setting powder. To avoid flashback in pictures (that white cast that can show up with flash photography), avoid powders that have silica in it. You also want a fine, quality powder that will effortlessly blend in with your makeup and lock it into place. Here’s 3 that do just that, all depending on your price point!
High-End: Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder
This cult-favorite and award-winning powder is super popular for a reason… it’s amazing. Laura Mercier’s translucent loose setting powder honestly changed the makeup game for me and was well worth the $38. It makes your makeup look flawless without being cakey, makes it last 10x longer throughout the day, and blends effortlessly. It almost melts into my skin to make everything come together beautifully.
It’s said to work for “virtually all skin tones,” but they also have a Translucent Medium Deep shade for medium to deep skin tones. But! If you’re not trying to spend $38 that could very well go towards a lavish summer brunch instead, here’s some more affordable options:
Affordable: Ben Nye Luxury Powder
So many celebrity MUAs swear by this $8 setting powder, and this was my personal ride or die before switching over to Laura Mercier. Not only is it super affordable, but it works like magic! A little goes a long way to make your makeup stay put all day with a beautiful finish.
It also comes in 8 different shades depending on your skin tone! Or, you can always use stick to translucent. I use the shade Banana to combat dark under eyes, and it’s also the shade Kim K uses!
Drugstore: Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder
This $6 drugstore power has been a must-have since 1935 (even your grandma has probably used this). This lightweight, super fine face powder gives you a great finish and coverage for an unbeatable price. It doesn’t crease, look cakey, or fade throughout the day. You can also use it as a lightweight foundation! It comes in 3 shades – Naturally neutral, Honey Beige, and Translucent Extra Coverage. They’ve been using the same formula for 83 years with raving reviews, so we’d say it’s pretty damn good!
Application
Take any of these powders and apply a layer under your eyes down to your cheeks, forehead, jawline, and chin. After 5-10 minutes (or however long you have), dust off the excess with a brush! During that time you can do your eye makeup, brows, paint your nails, eat 3 tacos, or whatever your heart desires!
