How to Prevent your Makeup from Fading

Posted by Jess Hall on Mar 15, 2018

Because no one wants to experience smudged, smeared, blotchy and faded makeup before 1pm, right? Keep scrolling for four of our fave tips & tricks for ensuring your makeup stays flawless all day long!

1. Always prep the skin

You’d never paint on a dirty canvas now, would you? The same rule should apply to your skin! Your base makeup is never going to look flawless if you’ve neglected the condition of your skin. To ensure you have a smooth complexion to work on and to avoid your foundation clinging to any dry patches, exfoliating with a gentle acid exfoliator will help to resurface the skin and rid it of any dead skin cells.

Another common problem for makeup lovers is that of patchiness, which is often caused by dehydration. If your skin hasn’t been properly hydrated, your skin will slurp up any of the water content of your foundation, leaving only the colour pigment AKA a splotchy base and patchiness. A hydrating water-based serum, lightweight moisturiser or hydrating primer will all work equally well!

2. Prime

To increase the longevity of your makeup, priming is key as it creates a stable barrier between your skin, its natural oils and the layer of applied makeup. This also applies to eye primers as oily lids can interfere with the formula of eyeshadow and break it down; a primer will prevent that by acting as a barrier.

3. Layer your lip products

Talking, eating and drinking (basically everything we love to do) don’t bode all that well for the longevity of our poor lipsticks. Luckily, this can easily be fixed through layering. The more layers of lip product, the longer it will take for it to eventually wear down to just a tint of colour. If you’re opting for a regular lipstick formula, try first applying a lip liner around the perimeter and over the whole of your lips as a base, and blot between each layer of lipstick applied afterwards with a sheet of tissue!

4. Use a setting spray

As well as prepping our makeup to withstand the disruptors that come from our skin, we also need to protect our flawlessly applied makeup from the world outside our bedrooms. Humidity, pollution and our general environment can wreak havoc on our skin, and a thin misting of a setting spray can help to prevent that by creating a barrier between our makeup and the outside world.
