How to Find the Best Lip Liner for Your Skin Tone

Posted by LiveGlam on Sep 21, 2020

Anyone else got a ton of lip liners just lying around? You know… when you pick them out based on how pretty they look – but for some reason, something just doesn’t look right.

The thing is, it’s important to remember that not all shades and makeup techniques are universally flattering. When choosing the best shade of lip liner – or anything else, really – you have to consider your skin tone first.

Finding the best lip liner for your skin tone

Not sure how to find the best lip liner for your skin tone? Here are some useful tips to guide you through it!

  1. What’s your undertone?

Different colors or shades suit certain skin tones better. The first step here is to identify your undertone – whether it’s warm or cool.

A simple test to steer you in the right direction is to hold a piece of jewelry up to your face. Try it out with a piece of silver jewelry, then gold. If the silver is more flattering, then you probably have a cool undertone. If the gold looks better against your skin, then it’s likely that you have a warmer undertone.

  1. Which shades are most flattering for your undertone?

Cool undertone: If your undertone is on the cooler side, then you definitely want to choose lip liners with a blue or purple undertone. It’s also ideal to go with darker shades because light colors are less flattering and they could easily wash you out. If you’re going with red, stick to plum shades and stay away from colors that are more orange.

Warm undertone: A warm undertone usually has an olive, golden, or yellow hue to the skin. Warm shades like red, orange, peachy undertones, or anything with a hint of brown are usually the most flattering shades on warmer skin tones.

  1. Choose a lip liner that’s close to your natural lip color

When it comes to pairing lip liner with lipstick, the general rule of thumb is to go one or two shades lighter than your lipstick – and a shade that is from the same color family.

However, you can definitely use one lip liner for a bunch of different lippies if you choose a color that’s a close match to your natural lip color.
