Do You Really Need the KKW x Mario Palette?

Posted by Lanie Edwards on Apr 11, 2018

10 years ago, Kim Kardashian and longterm makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic met at a magazine shoot and have been inseparable ever since. To celebrate a decade in the industry together, the duo launched a KKW Beauty x Mario collection featuring a lipstick, two glosses, and an eyeshadow palette. I got my hands on the palette and couldn’t wait to dig my brushes in. From the shades to the packaging, find out how I really feel about this palette below!

Let’s start with the packaging:

The actual palette feels really nice and good quality. It has a matte finish, is a good size, and feels expensive. BUT, one thing I didn’t like is there was no clear cover to protect the eyeshadows when I received the palette, so it didn’t feel brand new. It felt like the shadows were vulnerable without a cover, but that might just be my preference.

Next, I immediately started swatching the 10 shades. Some colors are more pigmented and softer than others, but the actual shades are gorgeous. I love them all and think they can work on any skin tone. It comes with 4 matte and 6 shimmer shades, which I think is a nice balance.

However, the shade I was most excited about, “Libra” swatched the worst. It was patchy and not as pigmented as I expected, especially after seeing those striking blue swatches from multiple MUA’s on Instagram. That being said, it is definitely still usable and beautiful, it just didn’t have that “wow factor” and buttery feel that I thought it would have when swatching.

Here’s what the swatches look like indoors and in sunlight!

The shade that swatches the best for me is the very last shade, “Bronzy.” It’s one of my favorite colors in the palette, and is so pigmented and soft. It also blends like a dream.

Next, I tested every single shade out on my eyes, which was really fun! That’s right. This eye look I created below includes every shade in the palette, and it actually worked out really well. I’ve seen people use Libra in very creative ways, so I decided to use it as a liner which really made the look pop.

Pros:

I dig this palette. I’m loving the shades, they blend really well on the eyes, and they work great together. Though some shades swatch better than others, when you actually apply them on your eyes with any brush, they show up well and feel very soft. There’s also no fallout!

Cons:

Even though this palette is beautiful, I don’t think it’s essential to have. You can find these shades elsewhere as they’re pretty basic and safe (no shade). Also, shipping is $8.95 plus taxes, which is expensive af for a small palette.

All of the shades are not equally pigmented, and mine definitely didn’t swatch as well as the swatches I saw in Kim’s IG stories. And yes, I really dug my fingers in there. While the pigment is nowhere near bad, I was expecting a bit more, especially with Libra.

Overall, do you really need this palette? No. Is it fun to have and work well? Yes. Basically what I’m saying is, if you missed out on purchasing before it was sold out, or simply just don’t have the budget to buy a $50+ palette, don’t feel bad. You can definitely find these shades elsewhere and still be just as fly!

What are your thoughts on the KKW x Mario palette? Did you purchase it? Why or why not?

Stay glam!

  • I didn't buy this palette because I felt the same way, I can get these shades elsewhere and I possibly already own them from other brands such as Colourpop which is killing it in the eyeshadow department latetly! Most of these colors not only looked basic, but in fact are and the only standout shade in the palette was the Blue and even that color didn't blow my socks off. You can buy 10 single eyeshadows for $4 each similar to these shades or any that one may like, a large empty eyeshadow palette that holds 24 single eyeshadows for $10 and get free shipping for any purchase over $30 or over $50 if it's international. You can save $5 if it's your 1st time purchasing from the Colourpop website and even then it's more attainable/affordable than the KKW eyeshadow palette!😊
