Top Mascara Tips – How to Apply it the Right Way

Posted by LiveGlam on Mar 04, 2017

To me, mascara is magical. I never leave the house without it. Because my eyelashes are blonde, I feel like I look a lot less feminine without a little mascara boost. With that being said, it’s definitely one of my go-to makeup items, and I spend a lot of time making sure I get the most of my mascara.

Did you know there’s a wrong way to apply it? Yep. So today we’re going to go over the top mascara tips so that you can apply it the right way. Get ready for some gorgeous lashes.

Find your type

Kind of like dating, it takes a bit of trial and error to pick out the right type of mascara for your lifestyle.

  • – Lengthening, Volumizing, or curling: Depending on the current state of your natural eyelashes, you’ll want to think about how they can best be improved. If they’re sparse, you might look into a volumizing or thickening mascara (we love this one from our mascara product review). If your eyelashes stick straight out, a curling variety will help lift them up. Lengthening mascaras will remedy your little lashes.
  • – Waterproof: Do you work out, swim, or cry often? (Just kidding about that last one… kind of.) Basically, if your lifestyle includes a lot of water exposure, you might want to invest in a waterproof mascara. Just bear in mind that it will be a lot more difficult to take off without effective eye makeup remover.
  • – Color: This one is totally preference. If you’re a beauty daredevil, you might try an electric blue hue. However, every girl should at least have one quality black mascara in her makeup bag. You know, just to have a good inventory.

Start from the bottom…

Now you’re here, at the end of your lashes. If you start at the lash root and carefully wiggle the wand up through the eyelashes, you’ll get a lot better coverage and thus thicken and lengthen those lashes.

Heat things up

One tip circling the beauty world is to heat up your eyelash curler with your blow dryer before curling your lashes. Doing so has a similar effect to using heating tools on your actual hair. Makes sense, right? So with a heated curler, your lashes will hold the curve a lot better than they would with a cold curler.

Apply a couple coats

The more coats, the more drama. Depending on the look you’re going for, two coats of mascara is pretty standard for a fully covered look. However, it’s not uncommon to do three or more coats. You do you, girl.

Go diagonally

Applying your mascara using the up-and-out technique is all good and dandy, but for a different look, consider sweeping the wand diagonally outward. It’s a bit more natural, and it looks fabulous with those eyeliner wings you worked so hard on. Just apply a bit more to the end lashes to complete the look, like this article describes among other eye makeup tips.

Last but not least of our top mascara tips, make sure that the rest of your look matches your mascara. For example, if you’re aiming for a glamorous night-out look, be sure to add a dramatic lippie to balance out your many layers of mascara. No matter what your personal beauty preference is, though, one thing’s for sure: if you apply your mascara the right way, you’ll always be bright-eyed and ready for a photo op.
